Fighting Games News Update: 03/31/10

We’ll keep it short, sweet, and to the point.

Samurai Shodown Sen

The Samurai Shodown franchise isn’t as hot today as it has been in years past, but SNK-Playmore is keeping it alive with Samurai Shodown Sen, which is bound for Europe this Spring. The US version was supposed to be released last November as Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny, but now it’s going by the Sen name this Spring too.

Continuing with SNK Playmore, we can expect to see King of Fighters XIII with an art style similar to King of Fighters XII. The camera seems to be pulled out some, so that’s a definite improvement over last year’s offering.

Heading over to the 2D realm, we can expect to see BlazBlue: Continuum Shift this summer. It’s the follow-up to Calamity Trigger and it’s coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Street Fighter IV for iPhone has launched and it seems pretty good. The control scheme is simplified and you don’t get as many characters (eight), but the multiplayer aspect is killer and the visuals are very good for a mobile game. Find it in the App Store for ten bucks.

Given the success of the iPhone Street Fighter IV, Namco could be trying to cash in with a Tekken 6 for iPhone too. Fighting games on a touchscreen handheld. Go figure.

And Super Street Fighter IV is set for release on April 27. We know the last new character is Turkish oil mogul Hakan with his super-slippery moves, we’ve learned about the pre-order bonuses, and we’ve got plenty of screenshots too.

But wait, there’s more. There’s the Dojo Edition of the game, the improved online mode with a “lobby style” mechanic similar to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and plenty of new costumes for our world warriors too.

I can’t wait!

Super Street Fighter IV: New Characters

Super Street Fighter IV: New Characters

All of the characters from Street Fighter IV are fully expected to return for Super Street Fighter IV, but who are the new characters? It seems that ten new combatants will be entering the battle of world warrior supremacy and all but one has been officially announced. That said, we think we know who’s number ten too.

Super Street Fighter IV: New Characters

So, who are the new characters for Super Street Fighter IV?

  1. Dee-Jay
  2. T. Hawk
  3. Adon
  4. Guy
  5. Cody
  6. Ibuki
  7. Dudley
  8. Makoto
  9. Juri
  10. Hakan

Female ninja Ibuki, English boxer Dudley, karate chick Makoto come swarming in from Street Fighter III, joining the ranks of those already coming from Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha.

We learned about Juri late last year and she’s the Korean tae kwon do expert with some strange energy force similar to Bison’s Psycho Drive.

Who is Hakan, then? We hear that he’s an Iranian oil mogul and he’ll have more wrestling-oriented moves. No official picture has been released of him yet, but there is a teaser of him in the second Super Street Fighter IV video below.

You’ll also soon be playing on the iPhone and on some new arcade sticks too.
