Fighting Game News and Rumors – 12/09/10

Lots of new fighting game news and rumors, so let’s get down to it.

kenshin

First off, Rurouni Kenshin is on its way to the Sony PSP. The initial graphics don’t look all that great, but the Samurai Shodown style action could be fun.

Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition is getting loaded with some new characters, like Yun and Yang, but it looks like Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma are being thrown into the mix too. Better still, these new characters could be made available for us home gamers via DLC on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network too.

Continuing on SSFIV, you can check out the 149-hit combo from Chun-Li. Totally epic. There’s also the Street Fighter: Beyond the Game documentary that’s worth watching too.

What about that other Capcom project? Well, there’s lots going on with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 too. In the video above, we see newcomers (to MvC3) Storm and Crimson Viper in action. Storm’s done the MvC thing before, but it’s cool to see a “new” SFIV make the jump to the versus front.

We also know about Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath, as well as the possibility of Mega Man and Frank West. Mike Haggar of Final Fight fame could make the cut too. Other rumors include Hsien-Ko, War Machine, Ultron, Hawkeye, Spider-woman, Strider, Iron Fist, Thanos, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, and Victor Delacroix.

mvc3boxart

That’s the Japanese box art for the game, which I think looks better than what we’re getting. Either way, we’re expecting a February 15, 2011 launch.

kratos

Oh, and remember how the Soul Calibur series had console exclusives like Link for the GameCube version? Ed Boon and crew look like they’re doing the same for Mortal Kombat, it seems, as Kratos is rumored as a PS3 exclusive character in the upcoming fighting game. I wonder who the Xbox will get. Master Chief?

Fighting Game News (11/12/10) – Mortal Kombat, Super Street Fighter IV 3DS, Clayfighter, Tekken Tag Tournament 2

Mortal Kombat 9

All kinds of krazy fighting game news to consider. Starting off with the Mortal Kombat franchise, we learn that the “reboot” version destined for release in 2011 has a couple of metal arms in its arsenal. That’s right, our ground-pounding hero Jax is going to be in Ed Boon’s latest project. The best part? One of his fatalities will reportedly combine his classic arm-ripping finisher with his head-exploding clap. Krazy.

Gamestop is listing an HD Arcade Kollection, which might be offering a compilation of several classic Mortal Kombat games. Remember when they revolutionized the industry with mocap? Relive it and get those quarters ready for putting on the screen’s edge.

We’re also hearing about a Mortal Kombat PSP2. Maybe it has something to do with that Android-packing PSPhone rumor.

Super Street Fighter IV - Nintendo 3DS

With Super Street Fighter IV on the Nintendo 3DS, there’s a possibility of an “over the shoulder” view that has never been experienced before. And if you’re wondering about those touch panels, they’re going to act as “hot keys” for supers, ultras, and other special moves.

Rounding out the news, there won’t be focus attacks in Street Fighter X Tekken, you can play the original SF2 on iPhone for free, Clayfighter is being reborn, and Mayor Mike Haggar of Final Fight fame may be around for Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Oh, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2? The tag-up moves are amazing

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Roster Update

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Arthur from Ghosts N Goblins

Four new characters for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 were announced at the New York Comic-Con this weekend. Representing the Marvel side of the equation are MODOK and Magneto. For the Capcom side, we are being introduced to Arthur (from Ghosts and Goblins fame) and Nathan Spencer (otherwise known as Bionic Commando).

I think that Arthur is an interesting and fun addition to the cast for this fighting game, since he is another one of those characters with unique dimensions in comparison to “regular sized” fighters. And yes, just like he does in his classic side-scrollers, Arthur can indeed lose his armor in the heat of the battle.

With the announcement of these four new fighters, the total roster for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is up to 26 characters with 13 coming from each side. I have a feeling that they’ll have even more characters for us as we get closer to the proposed spring 2011 launch, as they’ve indicated that there could be over 30 different combatants duking it out in MvC3.

So, the current roster consists of:

Marvel: Captain America, Deadpool, Dr. Doom, Dormammu, Hulk, Iron Man, Magneto, M.O.D.O.K., Spider-Man, Super-Skrull, Thor, Wolverine and X-23.

Capcom: Albert Wesker (Resident Evil), Amaterasu (Okami), Arthur, Chris Redfield (Resident Evil), Chun-Li, Dante (Devil May Cry), Felicia, Morrigan, Nathan “Rad” Spencer, Ryu, Trish (Devil My Cry), Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends), and Viewtiful Joe.

Even though they were announced pretty early on, I’m the most excited about playing as Dante and Deadpool. What about you?

Anyway, here are some of the new videos from New York Comic-Con featuring the new Marvel vs. Capcom 3 characters. Enjoy!

If the vids don’t load, you can also find them on Marvel’s site.

On a side note, you might also want to check out the explanation of Simple Mode and how even newbies can get into the battle without getting too confused.

It’s hard to believe that the original Street Fighter was released way back in 1987. That’s over 20 years ago. Online Schools has a piece on the evolution of video games and, well, it’s amazing how far we’ve come… even though we still play our favorite fighting games with eight-way joysticks and six action buttons.
