Street Fighter: The Legend of Dan Hibiki (Movie)

Most people already know that they are making a new Street Fighter movie starring Kristen Kreuk. As it turns out, though, the filmmakers may not be content with just making Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The plans seem to call for a whole series of sequels that will chronicle the entire Street Fighter universe.
If Kotaku is to be believed, there are talks that they could take this to be a “really drawn-out way to explore the Street Fighter world. Start small, then go bigger and bigger, bringing in more characters and eventually spinning it horizontally to explore other threads and origin stories.”
We may start with the Legend of Chun-Li, but we could very easily see the emergence of a movie that explores the legend of Ryu or, dare I say it, even the Legend of Dan Hibiki. What’s up with that pink gi anyhow?
Street Fighter II: The Japanese Rap
This is just so wrong…
Street Fighter IV: Introducing the Bosses
Street Fighter IV was originally announced way back in October 2007 and since then, Capcom has been slowly leaking out tidbits of information for the fighting game public. We’ve seen an incredibly muscular and bulgy Ryu, the re-emergence of some retro favorites, and the introduction of a luchadore too.
But what about the bosses? We’ve seen some spy footage of Sagat and Balrog in Street Fighter IV and today Capcom rounded out the top four with the other two notable bosses from Street Fighter II: Vega and M. Bison.
Here are four of the released images of Balrog, Vega, Sagat and M.Bison. As you may or may not know, they are known respectively as M. Bison, Balrog, Sagat, and Vega in Japan. Yup, Sagat is the only one with the same name in both locations. For more pictures, check out this post at Kotaku. Enjoy!
And no, there is no Yoda or Darth Vader in this fighting game.

Rock, Talim, Yoshimitsu Will Be Back for Soul Calibur IV

And so the Soul Calibur IV roster expands just little, offering us three veteran heroes for our weapon-wielding battle needs. Now that you’re done staring at Cassandra’s breasts (you are done staring, aren’t you?), you can turn your attention to a pair of outlandish characters and one sweet little girl who will have no problem kicking your ass with some serious tonfa action.
Three of the returning characters for Soul Calibur IV, from left to right (above), are Rock, Talim, and everyone’s favorite stand-on-my-head or sit-on-my-ass battler Yoshimitsu. I’ve never been a huge fan of Rock and his giant mace/hammer thing, but I’m totally digging the inclusion of Soulcalibur veteran Talim. She is easily my favorite female character from the series, largely because she’s so quick and she has awesomely easy high-low combo attack. And then there’s Yoshimitsu. He’s just weird.
I wonder who else is going to get included. We already know about Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur 4. Let’s just hope that they don’t go and toss Jar Jar Binks in there too. Anyways, Famitsu has more pictures of Rock, Talim, and Yoshimitsu, if you’d like to check them out.
What if Street Fighter II Bonus Round Was Real?
Check out this video produced by the guys at Mega64. They took the car-busting bonus round from the classic Street Fighter II and reproduced the stage in real-time. They manage to smash a few windows, but can they manage to get perfect? And when did the bonus stage ever allow for three characters?
Ed Boon Explains Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Some of the most pressing questions about this upcoming crossover fighting game were explained with the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe FAQ, but there is still a lot that leaves our heads scratching. If there are no fatalities in MK vs. DC, will it still have the same level of brutality? How can the crossing over of the respective universes of Mortal Kombat and DC comics make any sense?
Check out the video above from Ed Boon, the Mortal Kombat kreator, as he addresses these issues and whatnot. Yes, he loves the word “whatnot” for whatever reason. Or whatnot. And yes, there is a decent amount of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe gameplay footage included as well. And whatnot.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe: FAQ - Part 1

We were told that a new Mortal Kombat game would be coming this year, but we weren’t expecting something quite like this. Ed Boon and Midway have announced that the newest addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise will include characters from the DC Comics universe. That’s right. It’s not just Mortal Kombat. It’s Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
Remember years ago when Capcom decided to make Street Fighter vs. X-Men? That spawned a series of cross-over sequels, like Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK. I guess Midway is taking a page out of that character collection book, pitting the best Mortal Kombatants with the comic book heroes of the DC Universe.
Let’s go through some of the most pressing questions.
1. What characters will be included?
At Midway’s Gamer’s Day in Las Vegas, they only made a very minor announcement about the characters that will populate the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe fighting game. From the DC side of things, they have guaranteed Batman and Superman. From the MK side, Ed Boon said that we should expect Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Beyond this, no further information was made available.
2. What about fatalities?
Here’s an ugly one. Fatalities serve as the backbone to the Mortal Kombat franchise, giving us the opportunity to decapitate our opponents, rip off their arms, and light them up into a blaze of glory. Sadly, Ed Boon said that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe will not have fatalities. I know. WTF. The rationale is that the people at DC didn’t want to see Batman and the rest of the crew get torn limb from limb.
3. Will there be blood?
This wasn’t stated quite as explicitly, but seeing how they’re ditching fatalities, I’m thinking that the blood will be kept to a minimum as well. The removal of blood and fatalities will only upset the die-hard Mortal Kombat fans in the audience. I don’t know what they’re thinking.
4. Which systems will it be available for?
All evidence seems to be pointing toward a simultaneous launch on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. We probably won’t see it in the arcade, because Mortal Kombat hasn’t been spotted there in years. The Wii is a possibility, but I hope they don’t tack on some cheesy motion controls. If MK vs. DC makes it to the handheld market, you can expect some rather crappy graphics and gameplay.
5. When will I be able to play it?
The initial rumor said “some time this year” and the preview video mentions “this fall”, so I’m going to go with October-ish.
6. More info?
You should know by now that Hadouken Online is dedicated to bringing you the latest, greatest, and best-est that the fighting game universe has to offer. That’s why this is only part 1 of the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe FAQ. Another FAQ will be created when more information becomes available. In the meantime, check out this video.
Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur 4
While most fighting games fans are getting hopped up about Street Fighter IV, there’s another fighting game franchise that’s about to hit its fourth incarnation. And it’s bringing some crazy Jedi and Sith powers to the table.
In Soul Calibur III, there were three console-specific characters: Link (from the Legend of Zelda), Heihachi (from the Tekken series), and Spawn (from Spawn). These characters were not originally from the Soul Calibur franchise, so it was a welcome change of pace. Link fit in especially well, since he’s a sword-wielding warrior anyways. For Soul Calibur IV, they’ve welcomed the world of Star Wars.
Check out the video clip above for some crazy Soul Calibur IV action involving Jedi master Yoda and the dark lord known as Darth Vader. At a little past the halfway point in the video, you can see Darth Vader using the Force Pull. That seems a little unfair considering that no other Soul Calibur character has a ranged attack. Then again, he is Darth freakin’ Vader, so that’s okay.
Street Fighter IV Gameplay Videos: El Fuerte and Crimson Viper
As we get closer to the official launch date of Street Fighter IV, more information about the highly anticipated fighting game is starting to avail itself. We’ve already heard about the introduction of newcomer El Fuerte, a lucha libre combatant with rather incredible wrestling-style moves. Now we can see the world warrior in action. In the clip below, El Fuerte challenges Zangief, ultimately finishing off the Russian with his super special.
One of the other new characters, besides Abel, is Crimson Viper. She kind of reminds me of Vice from King of Fighters ‘96. Anyways, you can see her do battle with M. Bison and with Sagat below.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
Right near the end of 2007, we caught wind that they were making a live action Street Fighter movie that would focus on the story of Chun-Li. Appropriately named Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, the movie would star Kristen Kreuk (of Smallville fame) in the title role. In the meantime, we’ve heard that people like Michael Clarke Duncan (as Balrog) will be included in the action.
There aren’t any official shots on the set just yet, but the official movie site is now up and running (though it’s hidden behind a password), and they’ve decided to take the route of a blog. One of the inaugural posts, according to the Cut Scene, is that of a storyboard. In it, we see Chun-Li getting shot at with a bunch of bullets and then running away.
It doesn’t reveal much, but it’s nice to see that the project is underway. I doubt any of Street Fighter IV newbies like El Fuerte and Abel will be included in the mix, so we’ll probably get a similar character list as the Jean-Claude Van Damme Street Fighter movie from several years ago.
Anyways, on with the storyboard:

UPDATE: I just got an email from Aaron Horwitz, the guy behind the Street Fighter movie website. The site is now up and running again, no longer hidden behind a password.
He writes:
Just wanted to say thanks for posting the story the other day, and even though we’ve run into some legal issues, the site is now up again, password free, and under heavy construction, so excuse the design please. Thanks, and enjoy the site.
Looking forward to your future updates, Aaron!
