New Mortal Kombat Movie and Game (Plus Other News)
Aside from Street Fighter, very few fighting games have reached the same legendary status as Mortal Kombat. It is largely credited as starting the whole war against video game violence and gore. Well, it seems to be rising from the dead, despite the downfall of Midway. That’s right. Mortal Kombat is back. FINISH HIM!
There are two parts to this story. First, it seems that a new Mortal Kombat movie is in the works and it seems to have Jax working for the FBI and he’s hunting down such bad guys like Sub-Zero. They seem to be changing some of the mythology, however, as Baraka is depicted as a rogue plastic surgeon who took the knife on himself (rather than some beast from Outworld).
You can read more about the movie on Slashfilm and check out the leaked trailer video here:
But wait. There’s more. They’re developing a new video game too and, from what we can tell, it’s simply going to be called Mortal Kombat. Based on the new trailer, the gameplay will return to the 2D roots of Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3, rather than the more recent 3D incarnations of Mortal Kombat.
The new Mortal Kombat will seemingly be akin to Street Fighter IV in that you get 2D core gameplay with 3D rendered graphics. The fatality by Kung Lao at the end of the video looks particularly impressive, as does the depiction of Shao Khan.
In other news:
- There’s a trailer for Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown.
- Xbox 360 owners can get a new premium theme featuring Super Street Fighter IV gals in swimsuits.
- More Marvel vs. Capcom 3 screenshots are coming out, including these hi-res pics. More details have been released as well.
To cap off today’s roundup, here is a new Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailer featuring Dante (Devil May Cry) and Marvel’s Deadpool. So sweet.
Super Street Fighter IV Review
The highly anticipated sequel to Street Fighter IV has hit the streets with a total of ten more characters, but is it worth the purchase if you already have the original? Check out the full review of Super Street Fighter IV over at Futurelooks.com to find out.
Here is a brief excerpt:
I don’t think any game is ever going to dethrone the original Street Fighter II as the best fighting game of all-time, but Super Street Fighter IV has certainly improved on SFIV in just about every way. The roster of fighters is numerous and balanced, the new “replay” mode lets you study the moves of the experts, and the gameplay tweaks make a good brawler even better. Hakan is still a little too weird for my tastes, but he’s certainly unique… like a Borat-Hellboy hybrid.
Available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 at a reduced price of about $40 US, Super Street Fighter IV is well worth every dollar. It is unequivocally the best fighting game available on any current console today.
Sounds pretty good to me! You can buy Super Street Fighter IV for Xbox 360 or for PS3
on Amazon for about $45. I suggest you pick up an arcade fightstick
while you’re at it, because playing Street Fighter with a regular controller just isn’t the same.
Super Street Fighter IV Launches Today
It’s here. At long last, Super Street Fighter IV releases today on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It comes jam-packed with ten new characters, a second ultra move for every character, and re-balanced gameplay. It also has a “lobby” based online mode similar to what we saw in Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, allowing for up to eight players to battle and watch one another do battle.
Go forth, fighting game fans. Go buy Super Street Fighter IV now.
