Fighting Games News Update - 10/18/08

There’s a lot going on in the world of fighting games, so let’s get down to it.
Street Fighter IV
We’re still not completely sure when Street Fighter IV will come to home consoles, but we do know that Sakura will be in the game. She’s never been quite as good as the hadouken brothers (Ken and Ryu), but it’s good to have a little more gender balance in the game. Other console combatants include Seth, Dan, and Fei Long.
You can check out more screenshots here too, including a pretty epic shot of Ryu and Sheng Long (Gouken).
The console version will be just as good as the arcade version. Videos and pictures confirm this.
To get you in the mood for Street Fighter action, Capcom is putting together an anime movie to coincide with Street Fighter IV. I wonder if Gouken makes an appearance.
Soul Calibur IV
I picked up Soul Calibur IV a short while ago for the Xbox 360 and I’m having a world of a time trying to achieve a winning record on Xbox Live. I particularly hate facing off against the little pipsqueak Jedi master known as Yoda. While I could match his Force powers with The Apprentice, it is good to hear that Darth Vader is coming as DLC. For the PS3 guys, Yoda is going in the other direction as DLC too. They’ll cost 400 MS Points and $5 on the PSN respectively.
King of Fighters XII
Wanna know who’s going to do battle in this SNK fighter? Here’s the list of characters.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Looking forward to the day when Scorpion can kick Batman’s ass? Mark your calendars, because Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is coming to home consoles on November 16. I’m not getting it, because I’m just not a fan of combo-based 3D Mortal Kombat.
That said, there is going to be some limited edition cover art that looks totally awesome. Go Alex Ross!
Tekken 6
If the weapon-based combat in Soul Calibur IV isn’t your cup of tea, go bare-fisted with Tekken 6. The latest trailer is shown below. I also found some great screenshots.
Fighting Games Update: 9/21/08

Street Fighter IV is already looking to be pretty freaking awesome, but it just got even more incredible with the introduction of Akuma as a playable character. You can see him in action on YouTube. Don’t worry, he doesn’t suffer from SNK Boss Syndrome, so he’s surprisingly not unbeatable, unlike Shin Akuma (super Akuma?) in Capcom vs. SNK 2.
Speaking of SNK, we’ve caught word that The King of Fighters XII should be available for play some time this month, if it isn’t already available already. The graphics are supposed to be largely hand-drawn, amazing enough, so get ready for some absolutely incredible eye candy.
When you set things like fireballs and sonic booms aside, one of the most impressive video game franchises has to be Tekken. It’s very technical, but it’s surprisingly realistic (for a video game). Get ready for more, because Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion is on the way. Is this update going to be similar to Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection?
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is getting joined by Joker and Green Lantern. Unfortunately, it’s going to be the “classic” Joker rather than the one played by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Even if it’s not over the top violent, you have to admit that Joker’s fatality is pretty cool. Check it out in the video below. It’s near the end.
Fighting Games News Roundup
It’s been a little while since I’ve updated the world’s greatest fighting games blog, so I think that it’s only fair that we catch up on four of the biggest fighting game franchises that are set to see new versions in the next little while.

We heard that the Castlevania franchise would be making its way over to the Nintendo Wii, but we didn’t know that it was going to be a fighting game. A series of fresh screenshots have been released that give us a glimpse into Castlevania Judgment. I was never really into the Castlevania franchise, but now that it’s got a 3D fighting game, I may have to learn the backgrounds on some of these awesome-looking characters.

A steady flow of news has been slowly trickling out surrounding Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. From what we hear, Ed Boon will make sure that the Mortal Kombat characters will still do fatalities, as will the DC villains, but the superheroes — like Batman and Superman — will offer something more akin to brutalities. It has also been revealed that Flash will be in the game, running circles around the competition. Now we’ve just go to wonder if they’ll allow for the decapitation of Superman. I doubt it. I started to lose interest in Mortal Kombat after it went 3D.

The character selection screen for Soul Calibur IV on the Xbox 360 has been leaked, giving us a direct look at Darth Vader and the rest of the SCIV crew. Oh, and contrary to earlier rumors, God of War’s Kratos will not be making an appearance.
The Legend of Chun-Li is still in production, but it seems that another Street Fighter movie is in the works as well. I’m not sure how official it is, but The Legend of Hadouken looks to be a lot more interesting than Kristen Kreuk (sorry fanboys). This movie (trailer above) follows the story of Ken and Ryu.
