Official: Pokken Tournament is Tekken with Pokemon

Pokken Tournament

Well, this is both a huge surprise and no surprise at all. Namco Bandai has announced it is making a new fighting game called Pokken Tournament and it’ll feature different Pokemon battling it out in a Tekken-style 3D fashion.

It looks like Namco Bandai is leveraging its experience with developing the upcoming Smash Bros. games to spin off this new title. Harada-san is saying Pokken Tournament will not have the high/mid/low mixup game of Tekken, but will have its own mechanic. I imagine it’ll be like Smash, but on a smaller stage and more focused attacks (but no focus attacks). Harada has also indicated that fans of the Pokemon trainers shouldn’t be worried either.

The trailer has Lucario and Machamp, both humanoid style, fighting type Pokemon, but they’re saying the game won’t be limited to that kind of Pokemon. Again, given the connection to Smash Bros, porting Pikachu, Jigglypuff and other pocket monsters seems like a no brainer. I’m calling dibs on Snorlax now.

It’s aimed more at the casual crowd, but I can see the FGC jumping all over Pokken Tournament too. Unfortunately, they’ve only announced plans to release it in Japanese arcades next year. With enough hype, Namco will have no choice but to port to consoles too, right? Let’s just hope this project doesn’t divert too many resources away from Tekken X Street Fighter.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Preview Trailer

You’ve already seen some Tekken Tag Tournament 2 gameplay, but now there is an official trailer with even more information about the upcoming fighting game. As you probably remember, this is the first Tekken game where you have the choice of 1v1, 2v2 or 2v1. That’ll make for some unique matchups.

In the trailer video below, you get a glimpse of the different game modes: Arcade Battle, Ghost Battle, Practice, Time Attack, Team Battle, and Survival, plus Online Mode. There’s also a preview of the character customization, not unlike what you see in Soulcalibur. Expect Tekken Tag Touranment 2 to hit the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this September.

E3 2012 – Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Gameplay Video

So, as far as I can tell, nothing came out of E3 2012 about Tekken X Street Fighter, but Namco came out in full force with Tekken Tag Tournament 2… including the unveiling of the official Snoop Dogg stage. Yes, the rapper collaborated with them to create a custom song and stage for the upcoming fighting game.

They’re saying that there will be over fifty characters in total, plus a “plethora” of stages and lots of 3D fighting opportunities. Do you see Evo potential here? 1v1? 2v2? 1v2?

Look for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 this September. GET READY FOR THE NEXT BATTLE!
