Fighting Games News Update - 02/16/09

midwaybankruptcy

Despite being the center of controversy (and success) during the 90s with games like NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, Midway has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Word of this downfall had been swirling for a while now, but it’s still sad to see the once proud company go down. Are we to assume that Ed Boon and crew won’t be making another Mortal Kombat ever again?

If you had a lot of fun playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii, then you just may need to pay some extra attention to TMNT: Smash Up. It’s a fighting game developed by the same people who made Smash Bros. except it features guys like Leonardo and Raphael. I wonder if the Casey, the Rat King, and Bebop make the cut too?

In anticipation of Street Fighter IV coming out this week on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, 1Up has put together a series of videos that document the evolution of some of the fighting game franchise’s best-known characters. Look at how much they’ve changed in the last 20 years! Check out the videos of Ryu, Sagat, Ken, M. Bison (Vega in Japan), and Chun-Li.

Speaking of Street Fighter IV, Capcom sold 86,000 copies on the first day in Japan. Expect similar popularity around these parts. There’s also a very cheap way to unlock all the characters as soon as you buy the game this week. In the meantime, you can put yourself in the game and drool over the Mad Catz FightStick.

Check out the crazy version of Guile rendered above. This was created using the Unreal engine. You can go to the forum thread to see a few more renders of other Street Fighter characters too.

Oh, and still the cheapest place to pre-order Street Fighter IV (for Canadians) is on Amazon. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are up for grabs at $59.99, including free shipping. Other retailers are selling it for $70. You can also step up to the PS3 Collector’s Edition or the Xbox 360 Collector’s Edition if you prefer, but Street Fighter IV on PC is, by far, the cheapest option at $44.99.

Jumping to the Tekken end of things, we’ve got the latest trailer for Tekken 6 and, well, it looks very, very hot.

Street Fighter IV: Every Ultra Move

Street Fighter IV will be hitting the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 in a very short while and I couldn’t be more excited. Having played in the arcade, I’m really starting to appreciate the new art style, as well as the proper introduction of Gouken, the super master who you may know better as Sheng Long. As with some of the other Street Fighter games, Street Fighter IV will get Super Moves, but it’s also got Ultra Moves for each of the characters. These are more dramatic, more powerful, and more awesome.

Ryu got a little shafted with his Ultra Move, because it’s just another big fireball. The same can be said about Dhalsim, but Akuma is as crazy as he’s ever been. The new characters, like Crimson Viper and Abel, get some pretty neat Ultra Moves too. Check them out.

Street Fighter IV: Introducing the Bosses

Street Fighter IV was originally announced way back in October 2007 and since then, Capcom has been slowly leaking out tidbits of information for the fighting game public. We’ve seen an incredibly muscular and bulgy Ryu, the re-emergence of some retro favorites, and the introduction of a luchadore too.

But what about the bosses? We’ve seen some spy footage of Sagat and Balrog in Street Fighter IV and today Capcom rounded out the top four with the other two notable bosses from Street Fighter II: Vega and M. Bison.

Here are four of the released images of Balrog, Vega, Sagat and M.Bison. As you may or may not know, they are known respectively as M. Bison, Balrog, Sagat, and Vega in Japan. Yup, Sagat is the only one with the same name in both locations. For more pictures, check out this post at Kotaku. Enjoy!

And no, there is no Yoda or Darth Vader in this fighting game.
