Fighting Games News Roundup

It’s been a little while since I’ve updated the world’s greatest fighting games blog, so I think that it’s only fair that we catch up on four of the biggest fighting game franchises that are set to see new versions in the next little while.

Castlevania Judgement for Wii

We heard that the Castlevania franchise would be making its way over to the Nintendo Wii, but we didn’t know that it was going to be a fighting game. A series of fresh screenshots have been released that give us a glimpse into Castlevania Judgment. I was never really into the Castlevania franchise, but now that it’s got a 3D fighting game, I may have to learn the backgrounds on some of these awesome-looking characters.

Flash in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

A steady flow of news has been slowly trickling out surrounding Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. From what we hear, Ed Boon will make sure that the Mortal Kombat characters will still do fatalities, as will the DC villains, but the superheroes — like Batman and Superman — will offer something more akin to brutalities. It has also been revealed that Flash will be in the game, running circles around the competition. Now we’ve just go to wonder if they’ll allow for the decapitation of Superman. I doubt it. I started to lose interest in Mortal Kombat after it went 3D.

Soul Calibur IV character select screen

The character selection screen for Soul Calibur IV on the Xbox 360 has been leaked, giving us a direct look at Darth Vader and the rest of the SCIV crew. Oh, and contrary to earlier rumors, God of War’s Kratos will not be making an appearance.

The Legend of Chun-Li is still in production, but it seems that another Street Fighter movie is in the works as well. I’m not sure how official it is, but The Legend of Hadouken looks to be a lot more interesting than Kristen Kreuk (sorry fanboys). This movie (trailer above) follows the story of Ken and Ryu.

Rock, Talim, Yoshimitsu Will Be Back for Soul Calibur IV

Soul Calibur IV - Rock - Talim - Yoshimitsu

And so the Soul Calibur IV roster expands just little, offering us three veteran heroes for our weapon-wielding battle needs. Now that you’re done staring at Cassandra’s breasts (you are done staring, aren’t you?), you can turn your attention to a pair of outlandish characters and one sweet little girl who will have no problem kicking your ass with some serious tonfa action.

Three of the returning characters for Soul Calibur IV, from left to right (above), are Rock, Talim, and everyone’s favorite stand-on-my-head or sit-on-my-ass battler Yoshimitsu. I’ve never been a huge fan of Rock and his giant mace/hammer thing, but I’m totally digging the inclusion of Soulcalibur veteran Talim. She is easily my favorite female character from the series, largely because she’s so quick and she has awesomely easy high-low combo attack. And then there’s Yoshimitsu. He’s just weird.

I wonder who else is going to get included. We already know about Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur 4. Let’s just hope that they don’t go and toss Jar Jar Binks in there too. Anyways, Famitsu has more pictures of Rock, Talim, and Yoshimitsu, if you’d like to check them out.

Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur 4

While most fighting games fans are getting hopped up about Street Fighter IV, there’s another fighting game franchise that’s about to hit its fourth incarnation. And it’s bringing some crazy Jedi and Sith powers to the table.

In Soul Calibur III, there were three console-specific characters: Link (from the Legend of Zelda), Heihachi (from the Tekken series), and Spawn (from Spawn). These characters were not originally from the Soul Calibur franchise, so it was a welcome change of pace. Link fit in especially well, since he’s a sword-wielding warrior anyways. For Soul Calibur IV, they’ve welcomed the world of Star Wars.

Check out the video clip above for some crazy Soul Calibur IV action involving Jedi master Yoda and the dark lord known as Darth Vader. At a little past the halfway point in the video, you can see Darth Vader using the Force Pull. That seems a little unfair considering that no other Soul Calibur character has a ranged attack. Then again, he is Darth freakin’ Vader, so that’s okay.
