Fighting Games News Update – 02/16/09

Despite being the center of controversy (and success) during the 90s with games like NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, Midway has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Word of this downfall had been swirling for a while now, but it’s still sad to see the once proud company go down. Are we to assume that Ed Boon and crew won’t be making another Mortal Kombat ever again?

If you had a lot of fun playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii, then you just may need to pay some extra attention to TMNT: Smash Up. It’s a fighting game developed by the same people who made Smash Bros. except it features guys like Leonardo and Raphael. I wonder if the Casey, the Rat King, and Bebop make the cut too?

In anticipation of Street Fighter IV coming out this week on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, 1Up has put together a series of videos that document the evolution of some of the fighting game franchise’s best-known characters. Look at how much they’ve changed in the last 20 years! Check out the videos of Ryu, Sagat, Ken, M. Bison (Vega in Japan), and Chun-Li.

Speaking of Street Fighter IV, Capcom sold 86,000 copies on the first day in Japan. Expect similar popularity around these parts. There’s also a very cheap way to unlock all the characters as soon as you buy the game this week. In the meantime, you can put yourself in the game and drool over the Mad Catz FightStick.

Check out the crazy version of Guile rendered above. This was created using the Unreal engine. You can go to the forum thread to see a few more renders of other Street Fighter characters too.

Oh, and still the cheapest place to pre-order Street Fighter IV (for Canadians) is on Amazon. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are up for grabs at $59.99, including free shipping. Other retailers are selling it for $70. You can also step up to the PS3 Collector’s Edition or the Xbox 360 Collector’s Edition if you prefer, but Street Fighter IV on PC is, by far, the cheapest option at $44.99.

Jumping to the Tekken end of things, we’ve got the latest trailer for Tekken 6 and, well, it looks very, very hot.

Super Smash Bros Brawl Video Review Roundup

You may have heard about a little game that got released on the Nintendo Wii yesterday. What was it called again? Oh yeah. SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL! I picked up a copy myself and my initial impressions are that they’ve kept pretty much everything you’ve come to expect from Super Smash Bros and stepped it up a notch or three. The character count is bigger. The graphics are prettier. And you get to play as Solid mother-f*cking Snake!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is probably the best Wii game to be released to date and it doesn’t even make use of the so-called gimmicky controls. You might even enjoy it more by playing on a GameCube or Classic Controller. In either case, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. You could say it’s the new best fighting games king. Check out these three video reviews for further evidence of our never-ending praise for this fantastic fighting game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl – The Real Character Selection Screen

After making its way through the Internet these past couple of days, it seems that the previously leaked Super Smash Bros. Brawl character list is probably a fake, possibly shattering our dreams of playing as Bowser Jr., Midna, and Star Wolf.

Fear not, my fellow Smash Bros. enthusiasts, because a more legitimate source has now come up with the character selection screen shown above. Each character window is now in the usual rendered 3D, as opposed to some of the 2D cropped images that we saw in the previous leak. The Young Link picture, for example, didn’t fit in with the styling of the rest of the characters.

Some highlights from this new Super Smash Bros. Brawl character select screen include Marth, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Luigi, a new Young Link (from Wind Waker), Mr. Game and Watch, Ness, Jigglypuff, Lucario, and — get this — R.O.B. the Robot. As if driving a kart with R.O.B. wasn’t cool enough, you can now brawl with him too. There’s also mention of the possibility of Master Hand, though he’s probably a boss and not a selectable character.
