World Heroes Anthology Coming to PS2

When most people think of fighting games, it’s Street Fighter that usually comes to mind. SNK Playmore doesn’t want you to forget that they’ve had quite a few popular fighting game franchises too. They’ve got Fatal Fury, for example, which introduced us to a certain “me bouncy” girl. They’ve got King of Fighters, which paved the way to team-based fighting games. And then they’ve got World Heroes, a strange fighting game that took character inspiration from all sorts of sources. You can’t deny that Dragon looks a little too much like Bruce Lee and Rasputin is, well, Rasputin. Talk about a mad monk!

Well, while it may not be one of the best fighting games of all-time, World Heroes is trekking its way over to American PS2 consoles. SNK Playmore USA has announced that they are porting World Heroes Anthology to the PlayStation 2 and the collection is scheduled for release next Spring. The package wraps all of the World Heroes games you’ve come to know (and forget) into one convenient title. You get World Heroes, World Heroes 2, World Heroes 2 Jet, and World Heroes Perfect.

It’s only a matter of time before each of these winds up on the Wii Virtual Console. For 900 Wii Points each.

Retro Gaming: World Heroes

After Street Fighter II hit arcades in 1991 and everyone realized just how great fighting games were, every other company started developing all sorts of Street Fighter clones. They’ll probably never own up to it, but there’s no denying the similarities between the Street Fighter universe and these games. One of the lesser known variants that you may have played on an old school Neo Geo machine is World Heroes. In the video clip below, you’ll find a character named Kim Dragon (who looks a little too much like Bruce Lee) go into battle against M. Bison Brocken.

I actually like Brocken, because he had extendo-limbs like Dhalsim, as well as rockets that shot out of his arms. Some say that he was a dialed down version of a Nazi, but really, he’s just one crazy robot. And who doesn’t like robots?
