The Best Selling Capcom Game of All Time

Posted by: Akuma on Monday, May 26th, 2008

Capcom has been around for a good number of years and it is home to a lot of fantastic games. From Resident Evil to Onimusha, Duck Tales to Final Fight, Capcom is responsible for a lot of legends. With so many games under its belt, it can be tough deciding which was Capcom’s best of all time. Going strictly by the numbers, however, we see one title that is head and shoulders above all the rest.

The best selling Capcom game of all time also happens to be one of the best fighting games of all time. Capcom’s all-time top seller is none other than the original Street Fighter II. Not Championship Edition, Hyper Fighting, or any number of other variants to SF2.

We’re talking console sales here and not arcade machines. Released in June 1992 for the Super Nintendo (Super Famicom in Japan), Street Fighter II found a happy home in no less than 6.3 million homes, one of which happened to be mine. Coming in at a close third was July 1993’s Street Fighter II Turbo with 4.1 million units sold.

Unfortunately, Street Fighter is not the best selling franchise in the Capcom library. That honor goes to Resident Evil. Mega Man and Street Fighter are the second and third best-selling series in the Capcom family, respectively. For more lifetime sale stats, check out this post on Kotaku.
