poison from final fight and street fighter iii: double impact is a transexual

Final Fight is widely applauded as one of the world’s greatest side-scrolling beat ‘em ups. Who could forget Guy, Cody, and Mayor Haggar? One of the bad guys from that game, and I use the term “guy” loosely, is Poison. By and large, people assumed that Poison was a girl, because she had long pink hair and wore a tight-fitting white tanktop. In pictures like the one above, Poison is even depicted with a pretty big pair of knockers, ushering in a whole selection of PVC “action figures” for fanboys to collect.

Poison has also made an appearance in Street Fighter III: Double Impact as Hugo’s trusty sidekick. Even so, the exact gender of Poison has been called in question on several occasions. We never got a straight answer from Capcom up until now. You see, Poison was removed from the SNES conversion of Final Fight, because “someone seemingly disapproved of the piledriving of women in tank tops.” Capcom said then that Poison was really a guy, making the arcade-fueled piledriver a-okay.

So, is Poison a dude or a chick? Yoshinori Ono of the Street Fighter IV production team recently put the issue to rest once and for all. Ono told EGM that “in North America, Poison is officially a post-op transsexual.” I don’t know if this makes Poison the first confirmed transexual of video games, but I haven’t heard of another one anywhere else. Ono went n to say, “But in Japan, she simply tucks her business away in order to look like a girl.”
